Academy Rugby at KLRUFC

Kirkby Lonsdale RUFC have a thriving rugby union culture both at senior and junior level. The mini and youth section has long been the envy of other clubs in the region and with over 500boys and girls as active participants, with age ranges from 6 to 17, it is a model that stands us in good stead in developing our young players towards successful senior careers.

However,  we have recognised that the step up from junior to open age rugby can often be quite daunting and it is with this largely in mind that we have introduced for season 2019/20 a rugby Academy specifically aimed at our U15’s through to senior colts age groups.

Academy Aims

The Academy will be largely focused on a number of primary aims:

  1. Enhancement of the rugby experience and enjoyment of all Academy rugby players between the ages of 14 and 17;
  2. Encouragement of the “one club” ethos through active and inclusive participation through senior club involvement;
  3. Incorporation of coaching pathways to aid player development to ensure the easement of the step up between junior and senior rugby.

An important factor in these aims is that the Academy will come under the overall auspices of the Club Director of Rugby so ensuring continued linkage to the senior club. This will give emphasis to the delivery of the needed input that only the senior club can provide so that all Academy players, coaches and managers can call on and utilise the experience that is on offer from a Club that is currently playing in the Northern Premier League (Level 5).

We will also look to maintain close links with local schools so that Academy players are able to continue both with their educational pursuits and their rugby development in an aligned way. As an example of such educational links the Club can also offer work experience in a wide range of activities including IT, business management and of course and sports. In addition, we are developing strong links with local businesses and further education establishments (Colleges and Universities)  to develop career paths through apprenticeships and/or degree courses.

As well as being overseen by the Director of Rugby, Paul Carr has been appointed Academy Manager to ensure that the operation and running of the Academy will be as smooth and as seamless as possible.

In any sport, successful clubs tend to be those who invest in the development and running of successful Academy’s. Here at Kirkby Lonsdale RUFC we recognise that this is one of our key imperatives as we look and plan towards the future success of our Club.
